Single Of The Week ~ The Van T’s – Bittersweet

It’s been a week to celebrate for The Van T’s as they continue to cement their place at the forefront of Glasgow’s impressive music scene. Off the back of releasing their incredible newest single ‘Bittersweet’ last week, the 4-piece fought off strong competition to pick up the Best Live Act at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards on Friday night. Having seen them live in Tunnels earlier this year, the tag of ‘best live band’ is more than deserved and, with the success of their latest single, it comes at an exciting time for a very exciting band.

Their newest single ‘Bittersweet’ is the newest release in a line of impressive singles that will, fingers crossed, result in an album in the near future. The opening riff is one of the bands heavier to date, yet it still retains the bliss harmonies that characterised their early releases. It’s how American surf music would have sounded had been given a true Glaswegian upbringing. It’s managed to perfectly bridge the gap between toe tapper and head banger with the chorus primed and ready to be a fan favourite, just waiting to be screamed back at shows. The outro has a distinct Jesus and Mary Chain, a band they have recently supported, sound to it with wailing guitars that provide a perfect end to the song.

If the last week has shown anything it’s clear that The Van T’s are a band on the cusp of something seriously special. They have gone from strength to strength and hopefully it will not be long before they return to Aberdeen to blow us away once again.
